Teaching Self-Love in the Classroom & at Home

Posted on
Valentine's day might be fun and special to some, but how many children feel left out or look down on themselves on this one day of the year?
That's why, this year we want to do something different. We want to show kids in every classroom that they are beautiful just the way they are, and they need to be proud of who they are and love themselves as they are.
Self-love is a skill that all teachers, parents and children should focus on more in day to day life and the classroom, as many children don't know about it, or get to experience this at home.
So what are the benefits?
- Improved Resilience
- Improved Productivity
- Decreased Stress
So what can I do as a teacher?
Firstly, we need to teach the children what self-love is. Self-love the ability to appreciate yourself and find value in yourself and the way you are.
How can I teach the kids self-love?
Start by asking the children “Who loves you the most?”, “What does this person love about you?”, “What do you love about that person?”
Then you give them the big question “What do you love about yourself?”, let them think this one over as some children may not think anything positive about themselves at all. You can also throw in some examples around the classroom like ‘Timmy has great hair’, ‘April always helps her friends’, ‘Thandi is great at colouring in’
The thoughts do not need to be complex or insightful, but it's a step in the right direction to looking at oneself and thinking “I am worth it!”
We have put together two documents for this month of Love, a little something for everyone.
